Xbox Series X/S No Signal: HDMI Port or Board Fault? How to Tell
Power light on, fan spinning, TV insisting there's no signal. Your Xbox isn't dead — the picture is going missing between the console and the screen. Here's how to work out whether it's the HDMI port or something deeper on the board, and what a proper fix costs.
The console is alive — the picture isn't arriving
"No signal" with a powered-up console means the video is dying somewhere between the graphics chip and your TV. There are only a few suspects, and they run from free to fixable: the HDMI cable, the TV input, the HDMI port on the console, or the circuitry that sits behind the port on the motherboard.
The trap people fall into is assuming it's always the port. It often is — the port is 19 tiny pins soldered straight to the board, and it cops every plug, yank and knock. But the retimer chip behind the port fails too, and when it does the port can look absolutely perfect while you still get nothing. That's the fault cheap port-swap repairs miss, which is why some "repaired" Xboxes come back still showing a black screen.

Free checks before you spend a cent
A decent chunk of "no signal" consoles never needed a repair. Work through these in order.
Swap the cable
Borrow a known-working HDMI cable from another device. Cheap and damaged cables cause more "no signal" cases than people expect.
Change input, change TV
Try a different HDMI input on your TV, then a different TV or monitor entirely. This rules out the display side in two minutes.
Hard power cycle
Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the console shuts down fully, unplug it from the wall for a couple of minutes, then boot it up again. This clears a surprising number of handshake sulks.
Series X: low-res mode
With the console off, hold the power and eject buttons together while it boots. If a low-resolution picture appears, the fault was a video settings handshake, not hardware. (Series S has no eject button — skip this one.)
How to tell what's actually broken
- Signs it's the port — shine a torch in and look. Bent pins, a cracked metal shield or a socket that feels loose or wobbly means physical damage. - Signs it's the board — the port looks perfect, the cable sits firm, and you still get no handshake on any cable or any TV. That points to the retimer chip behind the port, which conditions the video signal before it leaves the console. A port swap on its own won't fix this, no matter how neat the solder work is.
