PS5 No Signal: Broken HDMI Cable, Port, or Retimer? How to Tell

No picture doesn't automatically mean a broken port. Sometimes it's a $30 cable. Sometimes it's the port. Often it's the retimer chip behind the port — the one cheap repairs skip. Here's how to tell, honestly.

Why this happens

Common causes

  • Cable: try a second cable and a second TV input first — fixes more "no signal" cases than people expect
  • Port: look inside with a torch — bent pins, cracked shield, or a snapped cable tip stuck in the port means board-level replacement
  • Retimer: port looks perfect, cable is fine, still no handshake — that is the chip behind the port, and a port-only swap will not fix it
  • Drop damage: a console knocked over while plugged in can rip the port pads off the board — repairable with trace work under the microscope

FAQ

Questions, answered

How much does a PS5 no-signal diagnosis cost?

Try a known-good HDMI cable at home first — that is free. If the console still shows no signal, mail it in: diagnosis is covered by our standard $88 service fee, and if you go ahead the HDMI port replacement is a fixed $340 (retimer checked under the same price) or $400 with a full internal clean and fresh liquid metal. Decide not to proceed and it is just the $88 plus postage.

How does mail-in work?

We email you a prepaid, insured AusPost label. You drop it at any post office. We diagnose it and quote a fixed price. If you approve the repair, a flat $100 shipping (both ways, fully insured) is added to your invoice on top of the repair — nothing to pay upfront. If you decide not to go ahead, it's just our standard $88 service fee plus the shipping.

What if it can't be fixed?

We'll offer you a trade-in, or you can have it back unrepaired — our standard $88 service fee plus return postage applies.

What's the warranty?

3-month workmanship warranty — if our work fails, ever, we re-do it. TMR stick upgrades use magnetic sensors with no contact wear, so the sticks themselves are immune to drift.

How long will it take?

Standard turnaround is 3-8 days door-to-door. Express Post (+$49): 3-5 days. Express Workshop (+$129): same-calendar-day repair.
